Col Dr. Kizza Besigye, a stalwart opposition leader in Uganda, has spent his life challenging the government’s grip on power. His journey, marked by arrests, torture, and harassment, reflects the country’s turbulent politics and its struggle for democracy.

As quoted by Oweyegha-Afunaduula, “the wrinkles of struggle are signs of wisdom for the many, many years of life struggle. Each line on the face hides a struggle, a sacrifice, a love carried to the end.”

Besigye’s path to becoming a symbol of resistance began in the 1980s when he joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) to fight against dictatorship. However, disillusionment soon followed, and by the early 2000s, he had emerged as a vocal critic of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) regime.

Like German theologian and reformer Martin Luther King Jr (1483-1546) put it, “…the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy…”, Dr Kizza Besigye’s life is a testament to this quote, as he has stood firm in the face of challenge and controversy, fighting for democracy and human rights in Uganda.

A Life of Struggle

Col Dr Besigye’s story is punctuated by brutality, including his 2001 arrest, the 2006 “treason” charges, and years of house arrest. The Public Order Management Act(POMA) has been wielded to restrict his rallies, while torture allegations have drawn international scrutiny.

Despite these challenges, Col Dr Besigye remains committed to his struggle for democracy, freedom, and justice. His persistence has inspired a new wave of activists, including Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, whose People Power movement (NUP) has blended music and protest.

A Legacy of Hope

Prof Oweyegha-Afunaduula notes that Besigye’s fight exposes Uganda’s democratic fault lines – a regime allergic to accountability.

His persistence sparks hope but also raises questions: Can the Opposition sustain its momentum? Will the youth translate anger into lasting change?

A Call to Action

As the struggle for Uganda’s democracy continues,  Prof Oweyegha-Afunaduula urges Ugandans to amplify their voices, pushing for inclusive politics and accountability. “The struggle is not just Besigye’s. It is everyone’s. Break the fear, join the rewrite,” he says.

Besigye’s life is a testament to the power of resistance and the human spirit’s capacity for courage and sacrifice. As the country looks to the future, one thing is certain – the wrinkles of struggle on Besigye’s face will continue to inspire generations to come.

Where Is Besigye?

Col Dr. Kizza Besigye, is currently detained at Luzira Maximum Security Prison. He was arrested on November 16, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, and charged with treason before a military court. Despite a Supreme Court ruling ordering his release, he remains in custody.

He has a long history of politics and military service. He joined President Yoweri Museveni’s rebel National Resistance Movement and Army (NRM/A) in 1982 and served as Museveni’s personal physician. After the NRM/A came to power in 1986, Besigye held various positions, including Minister for Internal Affairs and National Political Commissar. Besigye has run for president in several elections, including 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 but opted out during the 2021 general elections.

Besigye’s health has been a concern, and he has been hospitalized several times due to his deteriorating condition. He has gone on hunger strike multiple times to protest his detention.
