In a heartwarming tale of rags-to-riches, Indian-born businessman Barot Harshad Maganbhai has been conferred with Uganda’s highest national honor, the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer), by President Yoweri Museveni.

The award was presented on January 26, 2026, during the 40th NRM/A Liberation Day celebrations at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, held under the theme “Tribute to the Patriots Who Ushered in a Fundamental Change.

This prestigious award, conferred by President Yoweri Museveni who is fresh from election victory (as president-elect), recognizes Barot’s outstanding contributions to Uganda’s economic development, job creation, and community transformation.

The Rise of a Business Mogul.

Barot Harshad’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence and humility. Born on 3 January,1959 in India. Barot arrived in Uganda in 1993 with a modest capital of 500 Uganda shillings and began selling household items door-to-door, learning the ins and outs of Uganda’s markets and communities.

Through discipline, trust and unwavering belief in opportunity, he gradually built his business into aa thriving empire.

Barot’s journey in Uganda began in 1993 with a modest investment of $150. Fast forward to today, and he is now a billion-dollar empire builder, with a portfolio that includes commercial malls, housing estates, SME business parks, and government infrastructure projects.

His flagship Kyebando Business Park has become a national benchmark for SME development, supporting over 2,500 jobs and hosting over 200 SMEs. At the helm of Tirupati Development Uganda Limited success is Miraj Barot, the youthful and dynamic son of Harshad Maganbhai Barot.
