In a heartwarming tale of rags-to-riches, Indian-born businessman Barot Harshad Maganbhai has been conferred with Uganda’s highest national honor, the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer), by President Yoweri Museveni.
The award was presented on January 26, 2026, during the 40th NRM/A Liberation Day celebrations at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, held under the theme “Tribute to the Patriots Who Ushered in a Fundamental Change.

Barot arrived in Uganda in 1993 with a modest capital of 500 Uganda shillings and began selling household items door-to-door, learning the ins and outs of Uganda’s markets and communities.

Barot’s journey in Uganda began in 1993 with a modest investment of $150. Fast forward to today, and he is now a billion-dollar empire builder, with a portfolio that includes commercial malls, housing estates, SME business parks, and government infrastructure projects.
